Sci-Fi Thriller Dominates Netflix Charts Across French Overseas Regions in Single Week

Lee and Moura's thriller reaches number one simultaneously across three distant French territories.

Greta Lee and Wagner Moura headlined the week of August 3-9, 2026, across four French overseas territories, as Netflix data showed their science-fiction thriller The Last House climbing to the top film ranking in Reunion, Martinique, and New Caledonia within days of its platform debut. The speed of that ascent, across territories separated by thousands of kilometers of Atlantic and Pacific ocean, set the tone for a week defined by unexpected alignment. The Last House was directed by Louis Leterrier. Its simultaneous dominance in three distinct territories points to a shared appetite for high-budget genre cinema that appears indifferent to local geography. Several other films reinforced that pattern. En eaux tres troubles, the second installment in its franchise, secured strong placements in both Reunion and New Caledonia. Turbulence appeared consistently across every territory examined. The French comedy Paulette, featuring veteran actress Bernadette Lafont, landed in the top five in both Martinique and New Caledonia. Additional titles, including 72 heures, D-War: La Guerre des dragons, and Elize: Surgie de l'ombre, spread across multiple territory rankings, creating a shared viewing landscape despite the distances involved. Television programming revealed an even more pronounced convergence. The series Wrath held first place in Reunion, Guadeloupe, and Martinique for a second consecutive week. Ma vie avec les Walter Boys, whose third season premiered during the measurement period, landed immediately in second place across those same three territories. My Daughter's Father consistently appeared in the top three across each of them. Guadeloupe and Martinique demonstrated the most striking synchronization of all. The top six programs in these two territories were identical and appeared in precisely the same order. Eight series titles appeared in the top rankings across both islands: Wrath, Ma vie avec les Walter Boys, My Daughter's Father, The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare, The Bombing of Pan Am 103, Elite Force, Agent Kim Reactivated, and Chicago P.D. By contrast, New Caledonia broke from this pattern in meaningful ways. While The Last House matched the film dominance observed elsewhere, the territory's series rankings diverged sharply from the other three regions. The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare claimed the top spot, with The Bombing of Pan Am 103 in second place. Ma vie avec les Walter Boys settled into third, and Wrath dropped to fourth, a significant decline from its commanding position in Reunion, Guadeloupe, and Martinique. The data comes from Netflix Tudum, the platform's official rankings publication, which measures popularity rather than providing precise viewership counts. The figures indicate which programs captured the most subscriber attention without disclosing exact view totals. Despite that limitation, the rankings offer a reliable week-to-week indicator of which productions resonate most strongly with audiences in these geographically dispersed communities. The underlying cause of this convergence remains unclear. The alignment could reflect Netflix's recommendation algorithms directing audiences toward the same titles across territories, or it could indicate organic cultural preferences shared among French overseas populations. Viewing rankings alone cannot settle that question. As Netflix continues publishing territory-level data in the months ahead, researchers and analysts may gain clearer insight into which factor, technology or taste, is doing the heavier work.
